THE GREAT ESCAPE HAS NAMED ITS HEAVIEST ROCK LINE-UP EVER INCLUDING AS LIONS, SHVPES & BLACK FOXXES
The Great Escape, Europe’s biggest festival for new music has added some seriously heavy artillery to its already insanely high-calibre line-up by announcing its biggest rock and metal offering ever.
Among today’s new additions are As Lions - fronted by the crown prince of metal Austin Dickinson (formerRise to Remain singer and son of Iron Maiden’s talismanic frontman Bruce)- who bring their melodic but muscular post hardcore to The Great Escape for the first time.
Birmingham residents Shvpes, another group making a seismic impact, add a punchy mix of hardcore and hard rock to proceedings.
Exeter boys Black Foxxes have also been turning heads with their stripped-back, emotionally raw rock outbursts and will now bring their intense new sound to TGE 2016.
Brighton-based bands are also being given a chance to shine, including the stylish Wild-West-noir-punk fabulists Black Honey who were one of the star turns of last year’s festival, the ambient yet sludgy Yonakaand the swaggering garage rock duo Atlas Wynd.
Boy Jumps Ship reel off catchy punk rock grooves with added elements of grunge and classic rock, while Dressmaker combine haunting post-punk vocals with chaotic noise rock instrumentation to create a distinctively anarchic and atmospheric sound.
Elsewhere Leeds outfit Eagulls deliver intelligent, anthemic, 80s-inspired post-punk with a chunky guitar kick, and haunting alt-rockers Halo Tora combine symphonic and choral elements of progressive rock with the gritty sensibilities of such Glaswegian forebears as Twin Atlantic, Biffy Clyro and Idlewild.
The Great Escape is an global festival and rock acts from around the world include Belgian maniacs It It Anita – who combine elements of hardcore punk in the Refused tradition withsuch experimental influences as At The Drive-In, while Austrian tyrosWhite Mile’s self-description “dirty pole dancer stoner blues rock” is actually pretty spot on…
They are joined in the international contingent by the Tarantino-esque Jambinai who combine hard rock music with the style and instrumentation of Korean folk music to dramatic and adrenaline-pumping effect.
Also crash-landing in Brighton this May: Reigning Days show that there’s more to Torquay than comedy hotels with a rollicking combination of balls-out hard rock and rock-solid musicianship; all-girl mob Skinny Girl Diet mix grunge, punk and garage rock to produce a sound that is as stylish as it is trashy and as uncompromising as it is catchy, while Bedford alt-rockers Wholls infuse aggressive, sinister blues rock with hints of early-noughties indie.
This vast array of bands are joined by such rockers already on the line-up as rapidly-rising blues rockersBand of Skulls, Swedish psych-punks Sudakistan, compatriots and Gothic-cabaret-rockers Dolores Haze, Mediterranean-style psych-rockers Ouzo Bazooka andsparky home-grown punk-rockers from Exeter Muncie Girls . Brighton has never rocked this hard.
These artists join the recently announced Oh Wonder, Shura, Mura Masa, Dagny, Dilly Dally, Banfi, Isaac Gracie, salute, Declan McKenna and more up and coming acts.
